Description:
UV GUARD Clear Wood Finish was developed for use as an exterior wood
finish for log homes and quality wood siding. It is also very effective
when used as a coating on fences, shingles, and other vertical
surfaces. UV GUARD Clear Wood Finish is also safe to use on interior
wood surfaces and is especially good for areas that receive extra
amounts of sunlight. It is an exterior acrylic wood finish that contains highly advanced UV absorbers and stabilizers. These unique and effective
additives give greater protection and longevity to wood surfaces that
are continuously exposed to the harmful and destructive ultraviolet
rays of the sun. Finally, we do not recommend that clear UV GUARD be used as the only exterior coating. While UV GUARD will add longevity and protection to exterior wood surfaces, pigmented exterior finishes will provide even greater protection. In addition to the UV absorbers and stabilizers, the pigment particles themselves help to block the rays of the sun. Clear UV GUARD should only be applied as the “finish coat” after at least (2) coats of a stain color have been applied, or as a “maintenance coat” to brighten or reseal a previous finish.

Stain Application Tips:
- Check
the weather forecast. Plan to stain when the forecast is predicting
good weather that will extend 1-2 days after the stain has been applied.
- The moisture content of
wood should not exceed 19%.
- Log surfaces must
be sound and clean from dirt, pollen and
other surface contaminants.
- Surface prep should be done no
more than 1-2 weeks before stain is applied. Media blasting and other
dry prep methods are best, but power washing can work if done properly
and the wood is allowed to dry.
- Apply
to log surfaces with a temperature range of 40°F (4°C) and rising to
90°F (32°C) and falling.
- Do not apply to surfaces in direct
intense sunlight, since the surfaces can be too hot.
- If your home is in an area of high humidity, add additional mildewcides to the stain. Call us for recommendations.
- Mix
together pails that may have different lot numbers; this will help
ensure uniformity of color. Stir thoroughly to mix all pigments evenly,
and stir the stain periodically throughout application.
- Brushing the stain into your wood will help promote better adhesion thus giving your stain more durability.
- Spraying your stain followed by brushing is a good way to speed up the process. It is important to flood the surface of your wood while spraying.

- How often do I need to restain my log home?
- A good stain should last between 2-3 years on the southern exposure of the home and 3-4 years on the other sides of the home.
- What is the difference between oil based stain and water based stain?
- Oil
based stains have a strong odor, are user friendly, produce a natural
looking finish and require the use of solvents during the clean-up
process. Water based stain products are environmentally friendly, odorless but
can be a little more difficult to apply.
- What steps should I take before staining my log home?
- 1.) Make sure your logs are clean and sound.
- 2.) Make sure the surface temperature of the logs are between 50-90 degrees.
- 3.) Make sure the weather forecast is dry for two days during the
staining process and dry for a two days after the staining process.
- 4.) Make sure the moisture content of the wood is below 20% prior to the staining process.
- 5.) Make sure that you don’t have any compatibility problems with any previously applied coatings.
- 6.) Read all of the application guidelines for the stain material that is being applied.
- 7.) Recommendation: Use a sprayer to flood the surface of the logs with
the stain material and then immediately back brush the stain into the
pores of the wood.
- Do your stains contain a mildewcide?
- Most stain products have a standard amount of mildewcide in
them. We recommend adding an additional mildewcide packet if you live
in an area that is prone to high humidity and high temperatures. We
sell a mildewcide additive called Stayclean I/E.
- Is the UV protection in the stain or clear coat?
- The stain has a combination of pigments and UV-absorbers while the clear coat only has UV-absorbers.

Color Check
Each wood species and even wood of the same species accepts stain differently. Apply the stain to a sample piece of log or wood to be used. If possible, apply the test stain in the same manner that it will be applied on the wood surface. When the desired color is reached, add a coat of Clear UV GUARD. Heat the sample with a hair dryer to accelerate the drying and full color development. Standard shades of stains may also be diluted with Clear UV GUARD for more transparency or lighter color.
NOTE: Never apply stains without first doing brush out samples.
