Caulking Application Tips:
- Start with dry logs. Their moisture content should be below 20%.
- Apply log stains before installing the caulking material.
- Clean your logs prior to applying any caulking material. Any loose
debris, dirt, dust or grease could adversely affect the adhesion of
your chinking.
- Install backer rod before applying any log home caulking products. Backer rod is available in closed cell and open cell forms.
- Select a caulking material that is going to be compatible with your
log home stain. If you are unsure about the compatibility of your log
caulking and your log home stain then speak with the manufacturers of
both products.
- Do not apply caulking in direct sunlight. This could lead to blisters in the material.
- Apply 2 to 3 feet of material at a time and then work the material with a foam brush or trowel.
- Use a spray bottle to mist the caulking if it dries too quickly.
- Clean as you go. Soap and water can be used if the material has not dried.
- Caulking should not be installed to a depth greater than 1/4.
- Avoid caulking in the rain or when rain is imminent.
- Caulking should not be applied when temperatures are below 40° or when subfreezing temperatures are expected within 48 hours of application.

What is the difference between chinking and caulking materials?
Chinking
is an elastic sealing material that has a coarse surface which is
designed to look like old-fashioned mortar and is typically used on
larger joints. Caulking is a highly elastic sealing material that has
no surface texture and is mainly used in smaller joints.
Should I caulk or stain my log home first?
It
is best to apply a stain that is compatible with the caulking first.
The stain acts as a primer for the chinking and normally improves the
overall adhesion of the caulking material. Additionally, it makes the
clean up process for the log home caulking material much easier.
What type of tool should I use in order to apply my caulking material?
Most applicators use foam brushes. Others use steel or plastic trowels.
Do I need to chink or caulk my log home?
At some point you will probably need to caulk or chink your log home.
What do I do to my caulking when its time to re-stain?
Nothing. Simply brush or spray your stain material over top of the existing caulking material.
Can I stain overtop of the caulking on my home?
Yes. Most stains will wet-out and adhere to most caulking products.
Do I need to maintain my caulking material?
No. If the caulking material is properly installed, there should be very little maintenance work down the road.
How do I fix my caulking if it is torn?
The
entire process is rather easy. Begin with a clean surface. Gun the new
caulking material over the torn area, and tool the new caulking
material onto the old caulking material. The old and new caulking
material should bond together. Make sure to get a good bond to the wood.
