Cascade Clear Finish- Sample
|
|
Manufacturer: Sashco
Availability: In-Stock
Shipping Time: 3-5 Business Days
Description:
Cascade is a clear exterior finish that repels water and prolongs the color of your stain. It is typically used with Capture stain but is compatible with most other stain products. Cascade will not alter the color of your chinking, caulking or stain materials because it dries to a crystal clear finish. Finally, it is easy to apply and is 100% VOC compliant.

STEP 1
Check that the pigmented coat of Capture Log Stain is dry and set. The dry time is dependent on temperature and humidity:
Hot, dry conditions 1-2 hours
Warm, dry conditions 2-4 hours
Cool, humid weather 1-2 days
STEP 2
Thoroughly stir Cascade before application to clean, stained, exterior logs. Use a garden
sprayer for application and brush out runs afterspraying.
STEP 3
If the wood is very porous and the sheen on the logs is uneven after applying one coat of
Cascade, multiple coats may be required for an even appearance. It is
always good practice to try and protect logs as much as possible from
exposure to moisture
shortly after applying Cascade.
Tips
Cascade can add further protection to caulking and chinking. Apply a
coat over cured caulking(Conceal or Log Builder) or chinking (Log Jam
or Chinker’s Edge). The caulking and chinking should have a minimum of
3-5 days cure time before applying Cascade. Cascade may impart a slight
sheen over caulks & chinking.

- How often do I need to restain my log home?
- A good stain should last between 2-3 years on the southern exposure of the home and 3-4 years on the other sides of the home.
- What is the difference between oil based stain and water based stain?
- Oil
based stains have a strong odor, are user friendly, produce a natural
looking finish and require the use of solvents during the clean-up
process. Water based stain products are environmentally friendly, odorless but
can be a little more difficult to apply.
- What steps should I take before staining my log home?
- 1.) Make sure your logs are clean and sound.
- 2.) Make sure the surface temperature of the logs are between 50-90 degrees.
- 3.) Make sure the weather forecast is dry for two days during the
staining process and dry for a two days after the staining process.
- 4.) Make sure the moisture content of the wood is below 20% prior to the staining process.
- 5.) Make sure that you don’t have any compatibility problems with any previously applied coatings.
- 6.) Read all of the application guidelines for the stain material that is being applied.
- 7.) Recommendation: Use a sprayer to flood the surface of the logs with
the stain material and then immediately back brush the stain into the
pores of the wood.
- Do your stains contain a mildewcide?
- Most stain products have a standard amount of mildewcide in
them. We recommend adding an additional mildewcide packet if you live
in an area that is prone to high humidity and high temperatures. We
sell a mildewcide additive called Stayclean I/E.
- Is the UV protection in the stain or clear coat?
- The stain has a combination of pigments and UV-absorbers while the clear coat only has UV-absorbers.

Proper substrate preparation and application are imperative for product longevity.
1. Cascade is the finishing top coat for Capture Log Stain, but can be applied as a weather repellent shield over other compatible stains (call Sashco for guidance). Although Cascade contains UV inhibitors, do not apply over bare wood. Since it doesn’t contain any pigments, Cascade doesn’t properly protect against UV light on its own.
2. Check the weather forecast. Plan to stain when the forecast is predicting good weather that will extend 1-2 days after the stain has been applied.
3. According to the Forest Products Research Laboratories, the moisture content of wood should not exceed 19%. Make certain this is a fact by using a moisture meter.
4. Apply to log surfaces with a temperature range of 45°F (and rising) to 90°F (and falling). Plan your work so that log surface temperatures fall within this range: e.g., the southern exposure in the early morning or late afternoon, the western exposure in the mid to late morning, the east side in the mid to late afternoon, and the north side almost any time of the day. Do not apply to surfaces in direct intense sunlight, since the surfaces can
be too hot.
5. If your home is in an area of high humidity, add additional mildewcides to the stain. Call us for recommendations.

Storage
Containers with Cascade should be stored with lids tightly secured. While Cascade is freeze-thaw stable (good through at least 5 freeze-thaw cycles), it should be stored in cool, dry conditions, above 40°F. Keep out of the reach of children.
Maintenance
For the first 1-2 years after your home has been stained and clear-coated, the exterior logs’ surfaces should be inspected regularly. At this time, additional coats of stain (Sashco’s Capture) or clear coat (Cascade) may be applied as needed. For more
details, see the Maintenance Section in Sashco’s Capture Data Tec sheet (CAP 002).
