5 Common Log Home Chinking Problems and Solutions

Problem #1:

The chinking material is cracking.

Solution #1:

Install backer rod behind the chinking material and make sure to apply a 1/2” thick bead of chinking material.

Problem #2:

The chinking material is skinning over too quickly and now it is difficult to work into place.

Solution #2:

Only apply a 3 foot section of chinking material at a time. Also, lightly mist the chinking material with water if necessary.

Problem #3:

The chinking material is difficult to clean off the logs during the application process.

Solution #3:

Stain your logs before chinking. Staining your logs will help prevent the chinking material from getting into the grain of the wood. Also, clean as you go. The longer the chinking is left to dry on your logs the more difficult it becomes to clean up.

Problem #4:

The chinking material is pulling away from my logs.

Solution #4:

Select a chinking material that is going to be compatible with your log home stain. If you are unsure about the compatibility of your log chinking and your log home stain then speak with the manufacturers of both products.

Problem #5:

There are bubbles in my chinking material.

Solution #5:

Do not apply chinking material in direct sunlight. Also, if necessary install a tarp to shield your chinking from the sun. For more information regarding this problem see our “Chinking Blisters” article.
